Barberry
(Zereshk) is also known as zarshak shireen, berbery, Berberis vulgaris,
European barberry, Iranian Zereshk, Pepperidge bush, Zershak and sow berry.
Zarshak has lots of health benefits. Even in ancient times it was also used for
treating fever, lung infection, blood pressure, diarrhea, upset stomach liver
gall bladder disorder, heartburn and improves appetite. Zereshk or Barberries
has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive and relaxing
properties.
Zarshak
being an anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal agent it is used to treat infection of
the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts. Barberry treats bacterial diarrhea
because of its antibacterial properties. It is effective in treatment of
respiratory tract infections like sore throat, lung infection, nasal congestion
and bronchitis. Berberis vulgaris or Barberry is used to cure candida (yeast)
infections, psoriasis, and treatment of other skin infections. It also very
beneficial for eyes issues. It treats conjunctivitis or inflamed eyelids. The
Zarshak herb improves digestion and reduces gastrointestinal pain. Barberries
are useful in correcting irregularities in menstrual periods and anemia. This

The Plant
of the barberries has red stems and barks. Red berries stem and bark of
Barberry plant are called alkaloids. These barberries are mostly found in Asia , Iran , Europe and North Africa . The Barberry roots and barks
have lots of medical properties. Its Anti-bacterial property Medicinal
properties are often attributed often match to alkaloid- Berberine. Zereshk
fruit in ripe form is highly citric and had high content of Vitamin C. It is
mostly used in Asian cooking because of zereshk fruity taste and pleasant
aroma. The famous recipe is known as Zereshk Polo Ba Morgh.
Dried barberries are used in different dishes and its roots are used to make
tea. It is eaten in natural form or in solutions, capsules, topical ointments
and fluid extracts. Barberry has many benefits, but had some side effects like
it can cause vomiting, convulsions, nausea and dizziness if not eaten appropriately.
Zereshk uses for children, pregnant women or lactating women are also
considered bad.
